Essential Oil: Allspice, Jamaica
Allspice essential oil, Pimento officinalis, is similar in composition to clove leaf oil and has a warm, spicy aroma. It has been used traditionally to relieve aching joints and muscles. It is a warming oil which helps improve circulation and digestion, helps reduce cellulite, calms the nerves and promotes sleep. Use in a massage oil or muscle rub, being careful to dilute properly. It can be diffused to help relieve chest congestion. Allspice essential oil blends well with ginger, geranium, lavender, orange, patchouli and ylang ylang.
Use sparingly and well diluted on the skin because it can cause irritation.
Essential Oil: Ammi Visnaga, Morocco
Though still difficult to obtain, Ammi Visnaga Essential Oil is gaining recognition as one of the best essential oils to use to help control or minimize asthma attacks. Within her Aromatherapy Practitioner Reference Manual, aromatherapy expert and instructor Sylla Sheppard-Hanger denotes that Ammi Visnaga Essential Oil is a bronchial dilator that can be especially helpful in helping to control asthma and bronchial spasms. She states that Ammi Visnaga lowers blood pressure, thins blood, and can help alleviate nervous tension and stress. Our Ammi Visnaga Essential Oil possesses a unique earthy, herbal and slightly floral aroma. The oil is phototoxic and should not be used in topical formulations if you will be exposed to the sun within 12 hours of use. We agree with Sylla Sheppard-Hanger that Ammi Visnaga Essential Oil should be avoided with children, if pregnant and avoided with blood thinning applications.
Essential Oil: Amyris, Haiti
Amyris essential oil, Amyris balsamifera, or "West Indian Sandalwood" has a pleasant, woody scent that is often used in place of real sandalwood essential oil. It is nice in blends, and helps anchor the top and middle notes of the blend. It is mainly used in perfumery and as a scent fixative in soap although it can be used in non-aromatherapy room fragrancing products. Amyris essential oil serves as an inexpensive alternative to expensive Sandalwood oil.
Essential Oil: Angelica Root, France
Angelica essential oil, Angelica archangelica, has been known to be a miraculous healing oil but also has its uses in perfumery. It was used to purify the blood and ward of infectious disease. Angelica essential oil is a warming, stimulating oil also reputed to be an aphrodisiac. It has a sweet herbaceous aroma with spicy, peppery undertones. Angelica root essential oil blends nicely with basil, clary sage, patchouli, vetiver, chamomile, geranium, citrus oils and lavender.
Strong photosensitizer. Do not use on skin within 4 hours of exposure to the sun. Avoid during pregnancy. Not for use on babies or young children.
Essential Oil: Anise Seed, Hungary
Anise seed essential oil, Pimpinella anisum, has an aroma similar to licorice. It is useful in the treatment of digestive and respiratory ailments. In a massage blend, anise seed oil can help alleviate muscular aches and pains, indigestion and flatulence. Anise seed essential oil is also useful in thinning and expulsion of bronchial mucus. When used in soap, anise is said to mask human odors, making it great in a fisherman's or hunter's soap.
Use sparingly on the skin because it can cause irritation.

Basil essential oil, Ocimum basilicum, acts as a nerve tonic and helps with fatigue, depression, increases alertness, aids in concentration, relieves headaches, head congestion, migraines and muscular aches and pains. Bay essential oil can be used in hair care preparations to relieve scalp conditions and to act as a hair tonic. Combine with rose and juniper for a calming bath oil. Bay blends nicely with cedarwood, eucalyptus, geranium, ginger, juniper, lavender, citruses, rosemary and ylang ylang. Bay is often used to make after shaves. Should not be confused with bay laurel oil.
Bay oil should not be used during pregnancy. Use sparingly and well diluted on the skin.

Bergamot essential oil, Citrus bergamia, has a lovely light, fresh, floral citrus scent that is uplifting, rejuvenating, and balancing. It helps to alleviate fatigue due to stress. Black pepper essential oil, Piper nigrum, has a stimulating, strong peppery scent. It stimulates the circulatory system, and can be used in massage blends to help relieve pain caused by arthritis, sprains, joint stiffness and sciatica. It is also said to help increase alertness and memory. Black pepper essential oil can be used in a chest rub to help relieve congestion and flu symptoms. This spicy scent blends nicely with bergamot, clary sage, palmarosa, frankincense, orange, lavender, myrrh, ylang ylang, vetiver, sandalwood, juniper, coriander, geranium and fennel.
Essential Oil: Cajeput, Australia
Cajeput essential oil, Melaleuca cajuputi, is a cousin of Tea Tree. It is a powerful antiseptic that is useful in the treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases, asthma, sinus trouble, gingivitis, earaches and cystitis. Cajeput essential oil is a good air purifier that reduces the spread of the common colds and other viruses. It can be used to clean wounds and relieve muscular aches and pains. It is a powerful stimulant.
Use sparingly on the skin because it can cause irritation. Because it acts as a stimulant, avoid before bedtime.
Essential Oil: Camphor, China
Camphor essential oil, Cinnamomum camphora, is a powerful antiseptic that aids in the treatment of respiratory ailments, opens blocked nasal passages, relieves congestion, reduces muscular aches, pains and stiffness. Camphor essential oil is primarily used in lip balms, muscles rubs and bath soaks for cold and flu.
Essential Oil: Cananga, Indonesia
Cananga essential oil, Cananga odorata, is sometimes used in place of the more expensive ylang ylang essential oil in aromatic blends. Cananga essential oil is much greener than ylang ylang essential oil, and it does not have ylang ylang's beautiful, rich fragrance. We do not recommend cananga for aromatherapy use.
Excessive use may cause headaches in some individuals.
Essential Oil: Cardamom, India
This is a beautiful cardamom essential oil, Elettaria cardamomum, that does not have the sharp, bitter note that some poor quality cardamom essential oils have. It is full-bodied and is true to the spice itself. Cardamom essential oil blends well with other spice, citrus and floral oils. It is said to treat digestive problems, coughs, loss of appetite and muscle pains. In India, it is considered to be an aphrodisiac.
Essential Oil: Carrot Seed, Hungary
Carrot seed essential oil, Daucus carota, has an earthy and woody aroma. Carrot seed essential oil is used primarily for its healing properties and effects on the skin. It stimulates circulation, repairs and tones the skin, increases elasticity, reduces the formation of wrinkles, and scars. Carrot seed oil is a good addition to face creams for women over 30. It is also useful for balancing oily and dry skin.
Essential Oil: Cassia, China
Cassia essential oil, Cinnamomum cassia, is often used as a substitute for the more expensive cinnamon bark oil in aromatic blends. It suitable for candles, potpourri and other spicy room fragrances.
Do not use cassia on the skin. We do not recommend cassia for aromatherapy use.
Essential Oil: Catnip, USA
Catnip Essential Oil, Nepeta cataria, is from the mint family and has been used in folk medicine to help relieve headaches, migraines, cramps and fever. It is known as Catmint in the UK. Recently, Catnip Essential Oil has been studied for its unparalleled effectiveness in repelling mosquitoes and other insects. Make your own nearly all-natural insect repellent: Using a 4 oz. bottle with sprayer top, combine 10 drops Lemon Eucalyptus, 5 drops Geranium, 5 drops Catnip and 10 drops Cedarwood Virginia into 1.5 oz. high proof alcohol and 1.5 oz. water. Essential oils do not stay dispersed in water or alcohol. Be sure that you shake well before each use and discontinue use immediately if irritation occurs. Our Polysorbate 20 can be used to help keep the essential oils emulsified.
Essential Oil: Cedarwood, China
Chinese cedarwood is steam distilled from the wood of Thuja orientalis, an evergreen shrub widely distributed throughout China and Korea. The oil has a full bodied woody aroma with a sharp camphoraceous note and is used mainly as a base note in perfumes, cosmetics and soaps. The woody aroma blends well with rosewood, sandalwood, cypress, bergamot, cassia, cinnamon, clary sage, clove, jasmine, juniper, neroli, mimosa, labdanum, olibanum, orange, vetiver, rosemary and ylang ylang. Chinese cedarwood is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs and has been used medicinally in China to treat skin afflictions, fungal infections, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, inflammations, and general infections. The oil has strong antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties and may be of some use as a natural preservative.
Essential Oil: Cedarwood, Virginia
This cedarwood essential oil, Juniperus virginiana, is actually within the juniper family, but is the source for most of the cedar essential oils on the market. This variety of cedarwood helps combat acne, oily skin, greasy hair and dandruff. Cedarwood essential oil helps relax tension, and promotes peaceful slumber. It has a very pretty yet rustic scent that makes it a popular oil for blending. Use cedarwood essential oil in hair blends, bath oils, soaps, and other skin care products. Cedarwood is also uplifting when used in room fragrancing products.
Essential Oil: Chamomile, German, Egypt
German chamomile essential oil, Matricaria recutita, has a very high content of azulene. The azulene gives it a very deep blue color. Azulene is an effective anti-inflammatory agent making German chamomile the oil of choice for skin inflammation, infections, dry, itchy skin, insect bites, acne and other irritations.

Cinnamon leaf essential oil, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, is a warm, highly aromatic, spicy oil that works wonderfully to cleanse and purify the air, killing germs and bacteria. Cinnamon leaf essential oil can help relieve nausea, reduce high blood pressure and strengthen the immune system.

Essential Oil: Citronella, China (Java Type)
Citronella essential oil, Cymbopogon winterianus, has a sweet, lemony aroma. It is well known for its effectiveness as an insect repellent. Use citronella essential oil in bug repellent lotion bars and flea shampoos. It is great for making mosquito repellent candles.

Clary sage essential oil combines well with jasmine, geranium, lavender, bergamot, orange, ylang ylang, rosewood, rose, sandalwood and chamomile.

Essential Oil: Cypress, Blue, Australia
Blue Cypress essential oil, Callitris intratropica, origates from the Australian Blue Cypress. The oil is rich in guaizulene. Guaizulene is a sesquiterpene and is the constituent responsible for the oil's blue to bluish-grey color. Blue Cypress essential oil possesses a rich, earthy, woody aroma and is primarily used as a base note and fixative in perfumery and natural fragrance formulations.

Cypress Essential Oil, Cupressus sempervirens, is a beautiful evergreen oil that is suitable for use within massage blend and inhalation formulations. It is astringent and is good for oily skin. It can be diffused during the cold season and can be blended with oils such as Eucalyptus or Lemon Myrtle to help ward off illness. Elemi essential oil can cause skin irritation. It is best used within diffuser and inhalation formulations.
Essential Oil: Eucalyptus Citriodora, China
Eucalyptus citriodora essential oil, also known as lemon eucalyptus is a light, lemony oil useful for purifying the air and killing germs during the cold season. It is an excellent insect and mosquito repellent, and is a "must have" oil for summer blends and blends for pets. Make your own natural insect repellent: Blend 10 drops eucalyptus citriodora essential oil, 5 drops geranium, 5 drops catnip and 10 drops cedarwood Virginia with 30 drops of polysorbate 20. Add this to 8 oz of distilled water and add 1% Germaben.
Essential Oil: Eucalyptus Globulus, China
Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is best known for its ability to aid respiratory ailments and provide relief from congestion. It is highly anti-microbial and is an excellent oil to use during the winter months. Use it in a diffuser to help keep colds away. Eucalyptus globulus essential oil stimulates circulation and warms the body, increases concentration, and is useful for relieving rheumatic aches and pains. Use it in a steam shower or sauna to help relieve cold and flu congestion. Dabbed on carefully with a cotton swab, it can help stop the irritation of a bug bite. Eucalyptus globulus essential oil is useful as an insect repellent and as a treatment for lice and athletes foot. It has a dominating scent, but it blends well with pine, lemon, lime, cedarwood, bergamot and tea tree.

Eucalyptus radiata has all the properties of Eucalyptus globulus but is better suited for respiratory problems.

Essential Oil: Fennel, Sweet, Hungary
Fennel essential oil, Foeniculum vulgare dulce, has a sweet, licorice-like aroma. It is best known for its usefulness as a digestive aid, and it helps to relieve gas and indigestion. Fennel essential oil is often recommended for nursing mothers to increase milk flow and production. It is good in PMS blends and helps alleviate painful breasts during menstrual cycles. Fennel is a good diuretic, cleansing oil, and is useful in baths for detoxification. Fennel essential oil eases stress, has a mild sedative effect yet is also uplifting. Fennel can be a bit overpowering, so use it sparingly with other oils such as lavender, lemon, rose, sandalwood, basil, cypress and bergamot.

Balsam fir essential oil, Pinus balsamea, has a crisp, clean Christmas tree aroma that is uplifting, warming and calming. It is typically used to treat bronchial congestion/infection and arthritis. Balsam fir essential oil is very soothing when used in a steam shower or sauna. Balsam fir blends nicely with many oils including the citruses, florals, mints, woods and spices.

Frankincense essential oil, Boswellia carteri, is an ancient oil that has been used for centuries for meditation and spiritual practices. It helps center the mind and calm the spirit. Frankincense is a good expectorant, and it can help relieve asthma and other bronchial congestive problems. Frankincense essential oil is woody, balsamic, and slightly spicy. It blends well with many oils including the citrus, spice and woody oils.

Our Sri Lankan sandalwood essential oil, Santalum album, has a beautiful rich, heavy, sensual aroma with minimum 60% santalol. It has an astringent effect on oily skin and helps soothe irritated skin. Use sandalwood in facial blends to help balance the skin. It balances the mind and spirit, aids in meditation, calms the nervous system, and works as an aphrodisiac, especially for men. It blends well with florals, bergamot, vetiver, patchouli, clove and orange oils.
Essential Oil: Saro, Madagascar
Sourced from Madagascar, Saro Essential Oil is an uncommon oil that is also known as Mandravasarotra Essential Oil. Saro is strongly anti-viral, antibacterial and anti-fungal. It is also said to offer anti-inflammatory properties, making it useful for massage, sore muscles and bruise formulations.
Aromatically, Saro Essential Oil is noticeably camphorous, like Eucalyptus Radiata, when inhaled directly from the bottle. As such, it is useful in any respiratory formulation that would benefit from the camphorous and expectorant properties of Saro. Upon dry out Saro Essential Oil presents an uplifting fruity/lemon with slightly delicate floral undertones.
Saro, with its cheery lemony aroma, is definitely worth experimenting with in diffuser and inhalation blends intended to help combat the symptoms of the flu and bronchitis. Include it in room mists and surface cleansers intended to help kill germs and fight bacteria. Used in low dilution, it would also make a good addition to a chest rub or massage oil.

With a slightly milder, sweeter aroma than peppermint, spearmint essential oil, Mentha spicata, can be a wonderfully invigorating oil to include in formulations. Like lavender, however, spearmint essential oil can also be used sparingly at bedtime to bring about a sense of calm and relaxation. Use spearmint essential oil in soaps and facial toners. It is better suited for children than peppermint essential oil, and is good for upset tummies, nausea and fever. Spearmint blends well with lavender, jasmine, bergamot, orange and sandalwood.

Spikenard essential oil, Nardostachys jatamansi, has an earthy, strong aroma, similar to patchouli or valerian. It was used in ancient times as part of religious rituals. Essential Oil: Yuzu, Japan
The yuzu is a citrus fruit that is native to asia. Physically, these unique looking fruits have a slight resemblance to a small grapefuit, but the skin can vary in color ranging between yellow, orange and green. Yuzus aren't frequently eaten.
The yuzu is prized for its exquisite citrus aroma that is best described as a precious combination of tart grapefruit and sweet mandarin. Yuzu Essential Oil is used most often in perfumery applications as it has longer staying power in a blend. Yuzu Essential Oil is still considered a top note, but its natural aroma does not dry out as quickly as the other citrus oils. Emotionally, the aroma is uplifting and brings a sense of joy. Essential oils that blend well with grapefruit, tangerine, orange and mandarin oils tend to blend well with Yuzu Essential Oil.
Essential Oil: Zdravetz, Bulgaria
Zdravetz, Geranium macrorhizum, referred to as true geranium, has a strong floral aroma. It is used primarily in the perfume industry. Not much is known about this oil for therapeutic use. It, however, has been used extensively in Bulgaria where it is known for its aphrodisiac properties and for its balancing effects on female hormones. Zdravetz is said to lower blood sugar. It is useful as a fixative and blends beautifully with rose, geranium, clary sage, ylang ylang, and citrus oils.
Do not use during pregnancy or on babies.
Oleoresin: Vanilla, Brazil
The warm, sweet aroma of vanilla eases stress, brings on a feeling of comfort, and puts a smile on your face. The aroma of vanilla oleoresin combines beautifully with spice oils, citrus oils, and some florals.
Our vanilla oleoresin is produced using alcohol as the solvent. Once the essential oil and other natural constituents of the vanilla seeds are dissolved into the alcohol, the alcohol is removed. Vanilla oleoresin is more highly concentrated and is thicker in consistency than vanilla extracts that retain the alcohol. Use vanilla oleoresin in your moisturizer, bath salt, scrub, perfumery and fragrancing recipes. Experimentation is necessary when using vanilla oleoresin in soap and candle making formulations as vanilla oleoresin is not always stable in these applications.
Vanilla oleoresin will crystallize when cold. Warm the bottle under warm water to dissolve the crystals. This is especially common during the winter months.
