Chinese cedarwood is steam distilled from the wood of Thuja orientalis, an evergreen shrub widely distributed throughout China and Korea. The oil has a full bodied woody aroma with a sharp camphoraceous note and is used mainly as a base note in perfumes, cosmetics and soaps. The woody aroma blends well with rosewood, sandalwood, cypress, bergamot, cassia, cinnamon, clary sage, clove, jasmine, juniper, neroli, mimosa, labdanum, olibanum, orange, vetiver, rosemary and ylang ylang. Chinese cedarwood is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs and has been used medicinally in China to treat skin afflictions, fungal infections, muscular aches and pains, rheumatism, inflammations, and general infections. The oil has strong antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties and may be of some use as a natural preservative.
